New Condo; New Routine

I’m writing to you today from my new condo :)  I moved in last weekend, but my last 2 posts were brought to you by Starbucks because I didn’t have cable/Internet at my new place yet.  And Starbucks is literally right outside my front door, so I imagine that greatly contributes to my property value… that and the proximity to the lake and some great bars/restaurants, and of course Walgreens.

With the move comes a new routine.  I was previously living back at my parents house for the past 5 months because it was easiest to just move back there when I moved back from Cincy while I looked for a place to buy (a process that ended up being far too long.)  And I got to live with my cute little Lexie cat.

My biggest issue with living way out in the suburbs (although we really weren’t in that far out of a suburb), was the commute.  I don’t understand how people could do that indefinitely.  I’m sure I could write a long post/essay/whitepaper on all my Metra issues, but I won’t go into that here.  What I’m trying to say is that – my entire schedule had to completely revolve around the train schedule.  And that’s no way to live the fun, spontaneous city life I wanted to have.

I wouldn’t say I had a morning routine down to a science – some days I’d run in the morning, some days I’d decide to get to work early, etc.  But for the most part I would not run in the mornings, wake up sometime in the 6-7am hour and take one of 2 trains that had me leaving the house at 7:40 or 7:55 and arriving at my office around 8:40 or 8:55, so about an hour door-to-desk.

Eventually, it got to the point where I would never run in the mornings and I had a good routine where instead of taking one of the trains home at rush hour, I would run after work (either on the treadmill in the gym at work or outside, using the locker room at work) and then take either the 7:30pm or 8:30pm train home.  After 6:30, the trains only come every hour.  And they are not express…but really the last express train to my stop leaves at 5:06pm anyways…and then I’d have to leave work at like 4:50 so that would rarely, if ever, be able to happen.  Maybe on a Friday.

So depending on how long I ran, I usually had some extra time before needing to get to the train so it would force me to stretch or foam roll and sometimes I would even just shower at the gym so I didn’t have to ride the train home sweaty and cold…but a lot of times I did ride the train home sweaty and cold…sorry to the other Metra patrons.

All in all, my commute home would be closer to an hour and ten minutes + any time somewhat “wasted” due to abiding to the train schedule.  Like sometimes I’d get to the train super early and just do random things on my phone.

Anyways…point of the story…new condo.  So I’ll show you some pics, then we’ll talk about my new routine.

Actually I might just leave you with the picture of my bathroom (before oodles of cosmetic supplies filled those shelves) and this picture of my new couch, bar stools, and rug.

The rest of the pictures I have right now of the space are all from the day I moved in when the furniture wasn’t set up and there was clutter everywhere…and not the best lighting either.  The bathroom was recently redone, which is why it’s so nice.  The rest of the place ain’t bad either, but the bathroom is definitely the nicest room.

And for the routine…  well, it’s not set yet because it’s only been a week.  But now my commute is only 25 minutes at the most each way.  It’s heavenly.  Therefore, I have soooo much more time in the mornings because I don’t have to leave until 8:30 to arrive at work at the same time I would have before.  So ideally I’ll get my run done in the mornings, but in the event that doesn’t happen I have more time on the back end of the day too :)

I’m also currently doing classes at Shred 415 – 30 days unlimited because they had a deal for your first month…not sure I’ll pay the full price to continue afterwards, but more on that another time.  But for the next few weeks, I’m hoping to go to a class 3-4 times per week.

The best part is that my routine now includes the lakefront path again…I’m sure at some point I may get sick of running up and down that same path, but I don’t believe I did when I previously lived here, so I’m assuming it will take a really long time of living here for that to happen.

When was the last time you moved?  Did it completely throw off your routine (in a good way I hope)?

What’s the best room in your house/apartment/condo?

2 Thoughts on “New Condo; New Routine

  1. Wow congrats on the apartment! Your place looks beautiful!

  2. Congrats on the new place! And that commute sounds AWESOME! I live in the burbs now and when I commute in, it’s about an hour 45 one-way trip… but luckily I only work in the office (usually) one day a week. We are actually in the process of moving… even further away! :)
