Missing Weights & ZOOMA Photo Challenge

Alright everyone, I am hard at work building my new blog website!!  I should have a fun Friday post for you tomorrow morning, but after that I’m hoping all future posts starting next week will be on my self-hosted site!  I just have a few more kinks to work out.

But back to the normal course of business:

Yesterday’s workout was rather weak.  I ended up being a little tighter on time than I thought because I needed to get to Walgreens before I went to the gym.  And I REALLY didn’t want to run.  I don’t know why I’ve been in a bad motivational funk this week, but I am.  I got on the treadmill and only ended up going 2 miles in 17:10 (average 8:35 pace).  My legs were also a little fatigued from Tuesday’s faster run.

I figured I’d get in some quality core work and some weights since I didn’t run long and had a little more time.  I did the core work, but when it came time for the weights:

That’s really helpful, XSport.  Seriously – where are the other weights??  I didn’t see anyone using them or them just lying around somewhere.  Those big ones were too heavy for the type of exercises I do and for my strength level.  The little ones obviously are way too light.  And I was hoping, like Goldilocks and the 3 bears, those other 2 would be juuuuust right.  They were an 8 lb. and a 10 lb.  I don’t want to get one arm strong than the other…that would look silly.  So I went back to my mat and did push-ups, a little more core work, and a lot of stretching.

All in all, it was a super easy workout day.  This week is definitely not shaping up to be anything special running-wise, but I needed a mental break away from the treadmill for awhile.  I’m heading to St. Louis tomorrow morning to celebrate Mardi Gras for the weekend!  Angela and I definitely plan to run Friday afternoon…then we’ll see how the rest of the weekend goes, but I’m going to guess we won’t be doing any more running.

In other news, I’ve been saying for a few weeks now that I need to get better at taking more pictures for my blog.  Well, I found just the thing to help me get better at that!

ZOOMA is having a photo contest for the month of March.  I’m going to participate and you should too because you have a chance to win a pair of Altra running shoes!  A winner will be selected each Friday.  Here are the details:

You can read the official instructions on ZOOMA’s website, but here is the summary:

As a reminder, I will be running the ZOOMA Chicago Half Marathon in August and I want you to join me!  Use discount code: CAMB9 for 10% off your registration!

Does your gym ever disappoint you?

Have you ever participated in a photo challenge? I have not, but I am looking forward to doing so!

ZOOMA Chicago Half Marathon!

Alright everyone, I’m doing something that I rarely do.  I am committing to a half marathon more than 3 days in advance!  I think I did 3 half marathons last year, and each one I registered for within just a few days of.  (I did the same thing with the triathlon last summer too – but it’s OK, it was just a sprint distance.)  I don’t like to be tied down I guess.  And honestly, I’m usually in good enough shape to run 13.1 miles, but this year – I want to run 13.1 miles FAST and I know which race I’m going to do it at!

ZOOMA Chicago Half Marathon!

So here are the details:

Who: Me!  You!  Your girlfriends!

I want you to join me in the race!  I even have a discount code for you – CAMB9.

What: Half Marathon or 10k

Both races are CARA (Chicago Area Runner’s Association) certified.  Choose whichever distance you feel most comfortable running.  And my discount code is good for BOTH the half marathon or 10k  :)

When: Saturday, August 9th

I think the when is one of my favorite parts of this race!  It’s a SATURDAY morning!  What does this mean?  It means running the race won’t have you stressed out all weekend.  After the Saturday morning race, you will have time to relax at the post-race activities (which includes recovery yoga and Barefoot Wine!!), and then enjoy the rest of your Saturday in Chicago.  It’s perfect for anyone out of town who wants to have a girls weekend in Chicago, run a race, and still have time to enjoy this great city!

Running the Chicago Marathon?  Or another fall marathon?  This is a perfect time to test out your pacing, get in a fun long run, and/or see how your training is progressing!

Where: Chicago Lakefront

The race takes place on the scenic Chicago Lakeshore.  Ahh the lakefront in the summer – doesn’t that sound like a dream right now?

Why: So Many Reasons!

The ZOOMA mission is to inspire women to live healthy, happy, & active lives.  To do this, the company (which is run completely by women!), offers boutique racing events that are perfect for a girls weekend!

You will get this awesome shirt and a ton of other swag.

And the medal is cool too!  It is both a medal (to hang proudly in your home) AND has a detachable necklace (to wear around with you all the time).  Personally, I wish a could just wear my actual medal around all the time, but this is a close alternative :)  (If I was an Olympic medalist I WOULD be wearing that medal everywhere I went.)

Another great reason to run – Use the code CAMB9 for 10% off either the half marathon or 10k distance!  For more information and to register, visit the ZOOMA Chicago website here.

Monday Runday & Big News!

I surprisingly am not getting too fed up with the treadmill right now.  Maybe because I’ve been doing it so consistently that it’s just become routine.  Routines are good.  If I was used to running outside and then forced inside by the weather every once in awhile, it would be like a punishment.  But since right now there isn’t another option and hasn’t been another option for weeks, it just seems normal.  Also, as I highlighted in a previous post about the positive aspects of treadmill running, I really like that I can set my pace.

For example, yesterday I decided to throw in a fast mile in the middle of my run:

.5 miles @ 7.0
.5 miles @ 7.2
.5 miles @ 7.4
.5 miles @ 7.6
1 mile @ 8.6
2 miles @ 7.5
Total of 5 miles in 39:45 (7:57 average pace)

I was in a particularly good mood (I’ll share why in a just a minute), so I decided I should try out some speed work.  I haven’t done speed work since probably September, before the Chicago Marathon.  And I didn’t want to do anything crazy, but I knew I could handle to go a little faster since I have been finishing most of my treadmill runs at faster than 8-minute pace.  After a 2-mile warm-up, I increased to 6:58 pace for a mile, then back down to 8:00 pace for the remainder of the run.  It definitely wasn’t the easiest mile, but not super hard either.  My main struggle was that I forgot both a headband and a water bottle.  And since I have short side bangs now, it was rather uncomfortable running with that hair bopping around in my face/eye the whole time.

After the run, I went to the locker room to gather my things, and found a nice little treat waiting for me (and all the other female patrons of the YMCA):

Someone must work for Hallmark and had all these leftover Thanksgiving cards, because there were a ton of nice Hallmark cards!  I took one of each variety (so like 12 cards total)…  now I need to remember in 9 months that I have these cards to send out.  This one is my favorite (I actually took 2 of this design):
Alright, well that’s enough fluff – onto my big news!!  I found out yesterday that I’ve been selected as a ZOOMA Chicago race ambassador!!  I’ll be promoting the race, running it myself, and helping out with all the fun events and training leading up to the race!  I’ll have more info on specifics later, but mark your calendars for Saturday, August 9th for the ZOOMA Chicago Half Marathon and 10k!  I’ll have a promo code soon so you can all get 10% off your entry fee too :)

What do you tend to forget most when you go to workout?

Do you like sending greeting cards?
